Issued in Abuja; Monday 26th OCTOBER, 2020

The African Business Roundtable (ABR), Africa’s foremost association of business and business leaders, has pledged its support for Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala who emerged as one of the finalists for the position of Director-General of the World Trade Organization.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, who is an economist and development expert, was Nigeria’s first female finance and foreign minister. She has a vast experience in international finance, development and public health which has earned her a formidable global reputation from her laudable work and experience of handling Emerging Economy/Middle-Income country issues across the globe.

Considering that no African has led this global trade institution since its inception and the current challenges in global trade negotiations, we believe Dr. Okonjo-Iweala is best suited to lead the WTO at this period.

The ABR joins the African Union and other African voices to call on the WTO stakeholders to give Dr. Okonjo-Iweala and Africa this opportunity, for it is the right thing to do.
