THE LEGACY OF A Legend

Alhaji Dr. Bamanga M. Tukur, CON, COM, was one of Nigeria’s distinguished public servants, businessmen, politicians and continental business leaders. Born on 15 September 1935, he built a career spanning maritime administration, elected office, federal government, private enterprise, national party leadership and African economic diplomacy.

His national profile was established through his leadership of the Nigerian Ports Authority from 1975 to 1982. He subsequently became Governor of the former Gongola State in 1983, before returning to private enterprise and founding BHI Holdings, also known as the DADDO Group of Companies.

He returned to federal public service as Minister of Industries from 1993 to 1995 and contributed to national development planning. At the continental level, he served as Executive President of the African Business Roundtable and Chairman of the NEPAD Business Group, representing African private-sector interests at major international platforms. 

In March 2012, he was elected National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, serving until January 2014. In June 2014, President Goodluck Jonathan appointed him Ambassador-at-Large. 

His recognitions included the Commander of the Order of the Niger of Nigeria, Commander of the Order of the Mono of Togo and Commander of the Order of the Niger of Côte d’Ivoire. He received honorary degrees from Benue State University and Ladoke Akintola University and was recognized as a Fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology. 

He also held distinguished traditional titles, including Tafidan Adamawa and Wakilin Ganye. His public life was characterized by a sustained commitment to institution-building, African enterprise, regional integration and the conviction that the private sector must be an active partner in Africa’s development.
